Towing a trailer down the highway takes steady focus, and long trips can wear on any driver. For 2027, Ford is giving F-150 owners a new tool for those drives: BlueCruise with Towing, a hands-free highway driving feature built to work with a trailer hooked up behind the truck.

This guide explains how the feature works, the limits Ford built into it and how much each 2027 F-150 engine can pull. It also covers the powertrain and design updates that matter to buyers comparing configurations.

How Hands-Free Towing Works

BlueCruise has offered hands-free highway driving on Ford vehicles from the 2021 model year onward. With the 2027 F-150, it now works with a trailer attached. Once you enter a Blue Zone, a pre-qualified section of divided highway, the system helps with steering, keeps the truck centred in its lane and adjusts speed while you keep your eyes on the road.

Ford’s engineers call it one of the most complex software projects they’ve worked on. A trailer changes how a truck steers and stops. Its weight, how it’s loaded, crosswinds and sway all affect the drive. To cover those variables, Ford tested dozens of truck-and-trailer combinations with different weights and load layouts on real roads with high elevations, tight curves and windy open plains. The team then expanded that testing in its Driving Dynamics Lab simulator to run far more scenarios than road testing alone allows.

Safeguards Built Into BlueCruise with Towing

Ford designed the feature to help drivers use it responsibly. Several checks run before and during every towing trip:

  • Trailer profile: You create a profile with the trailer’s accurate dimensions before the system can be used.
  • Sway monitoring: If sway continues, the truck slows down, limits speed or asks you to take the wheel.
  • Weight and tire pressure: The feature won’t operate if the combined truck and trailer weight goes over the allowed limit, or if the tire pressure warning light comes on.
  • Highway only: It works only in designated Blue Zones on controlled-access highways.

A few BlueCruise functions pause while towing. Lane changes are done by hand, In-Lane Repositioning is switched off and the system asks for your hands on the wheel when it detects a construction zone. These limits keep the driver in charge in the moments where a trailer needs extra attention.

How Much Can Each 2027 F-150 Engine Tow?

BlueCruise with Towing handles trailers up to 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg) when the truck has the Tow/Haul Package and the optional Max Tow Axle. Several engines are rated to pull far more than that in conventional towing. Here’s how the six-engine lineup compares:

Engine

Output

Max Conventional Towing

3.5 L EcoBoost V6

400 hp / 500 lb-ft

13,500 lbs (6,123 kg)

5.0 L V8

400 hp / 410 lb-ft

12,800 lbs (5,806 kg)

3.5 L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6

430 hp / 570 lb-ft

12,400 lbs (5,625 kg)

5.2 L Supercharged V8

720 hp / 640 lb-ft

8,700 lbs (3,946 kg)

3.0 L EcoBoost V6

325 hp / 400 lb-ft

8,400 lbs (3,810 kg)

3.5 L High-Output EcoBoost V6

450 hp / 510 lb-ft

8,200 lbs (3,719 kg)

The 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 rating applies to a SuperCrew 4x4 with the 6.5-foot box, the Max Tow/Haul Package and the Max Tow Axle. Max towing changes with cargo, vehicle configuration, accessories and the number of passengers on board.

A New Standard Engine for 2027

The new 3.0 L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 replaces the 2.7 L EcoBoost V6 as the base engine. It makes 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque and shares its core design with the engine it replaces. Ford says it reaches peak pulling power sooner and delivers roughly 10% to 11% more torque in the range used for everyday driving, which gives the base truck a stronger feel around town.

Every gas engine pairs with a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, while the PowerBoost uses a 10-speed Modular Hybrid automatic.

Other Tech and Design Updates Worth Knowing

The PowerBoost full hybrid V6 pairs its 570 lb-ft of torque with available Pro Power Onboard at 2.4 kW or 7.2 kW, so the truck can supply electrical power from its own outlets. That’s useful on a work site with no hookup nearby.

The XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum also gain newly designed grilles and new wheel designs for 2027. Ford shaped the update around owner feedback asking for a modern take on the F-150’s familiar face, keeping the same work-ready capability underneath.

Is BlueCruise with Towing Right for Your Truck?

If you tow on the highway often, BlueCruise with Towing is the feature to put at the top of your list on a 2027 F-150. Drivers who pull a camper on long trips or haul equipment between work sites get hands-free help on the long stretches where fatigue builds.

Start with a BlueCruise-equipped XLT, Tremor, Lariat, King Ranch or Platinum. Add the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle, then pick an engine rated above your trailer weight. For trailers heavier than 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg), the 3.5 L EcoBoost V6, 5.0 L V8 and PowerBoost hybrid give you the extra conventional towing capacity, with hands-free driving ready for trips that stay within the BlueCruise limit.
